Ordinary 14-day rail pass for Japan is $407...the first class version isn't too much more expensive, at $554. Decisions decisions.

the other thing to remember about first class is it means I need to reserve a seat every single time I ride, which is annoying

sounds like it could be a pain in the ass, especially if your schedule isn't set in stone

Would those be considered the Green cars or something? There was one time I was on a PACKED train going south and the cars in the front

yes--Green Cars is what they call them. Apparently less likely to be crowded too, due to price

However on the rail pass, you can't take the fastest Shinkansen in certain spots, so for the sake of argument, what's the pay-per-ride cost?

I dunno but I've gotten on one of those Nozomi trains before on accident and the shame I felt was unbearable lol.

ya hehe I snuck onto Nozomi with a rail pass twice--once in 2006 by accident, once deliberately in 2014

interesting--I haven't done first class there before, what obstacle would language create?
