Whereas in England (or much more significantly, the USA), the idea was that trains were the past, and they'd all be closed soon

Interestingly, Japan *also* thought trains were going the way of the dodo...back in the 1950s. Opening the Shinkansen reversed that.

But it was a very difficult, uphill battle to get the Shinkansen built, and the entire time, the team behind it was mocked relentlessly.
