Not sure re: rarity of TGV or ubiquity of Velaro, but I know that the lack of Shinkansen exports is not for lack of effort by Japan...https://twitter.com/ArjunM1412/status/867743422605541376 …

@380kmh We don't often hear of Shinkansen exports. TGV also barely exports. Plenty of Velaros worldwide. What could be the reason?

The most prominent Shinkansen export I know is Taiwan's HSR, which uses modified 700 series Shinkansen. Mainland China, too...

...uses modified E2 series. Vietnam was interested but then cancelled, Indonesia (iirc) was going to but then decided to buy Chinese instead

To say nothing of Japan's tireless efforts to export Shinkansen to the USA--in California, Texas, Florida, and the Northeast.

I wonder if it's because of interoperability with existing networks- that's often considered not possible with a Shinkansen network.

Shinkansen can interoperate with any network that uses the same gauge (1435mm, standard worldwide) and electrification (25kV AC iirc)

Shinkansen can't interoperate with *most* Japanese conventional lines because of the gauge difference (1067mm)

Japan's example is clear, as also the TGV being somewhat impractical, but I often wonder why networks choose Velaro over Shinkansen.
