I dunno much about it, but I took trains between Chinese cities when I was there. Very convenient for me at least.
In Tokyo they are virtually indistinguishable, in NYC there is a clear difference between the *kind* of service on MTA and LIRR

Right, do they charge separately for that in Tokyo? Do you have to pay an extra fee going out?

No, fares are always based on distance, regardless of how many companies you use to get there

That's a good system. Biggest personal peeves with MTA:high flat fares, and lack of service into New Jersey.

I'd be happy with flat fares if they didn't cost the same amount as riding the whole line in Hong Kong.
