that list *only* count's Tokyo's subways, which constitute a tiny portion of its rail network & ridership
No I'm not saying they don't exist at all, but that they are not designed to the same standards as their subways

In Tokyo there's no way to tell at a glance if you're looking at a subway or a "commuter rail" train; they also run onto each other's tracks
-
that is, a subway train reaching the end of its line will continue right past the end of the line on a suburban railroad and vice versa

Got it. Tokyo subways are as fast as intercity rail? Seems wasteful honestly, they can't possibly reach terminal velocity between stations.
-
No no not intercity rail, metropolitan rail; rail within one metro area, not between them
-
I know this must be maddening; it's not easy to explain
-
Rolling stock on the subways tops out at 50-70 mph, most non-HSR lines in Japan top out at 80 mph
