If Boston's commuter rail were redesigned along the lines of Japanese suburban rail companies, what sort of destinations would they have?
-
Some already have suitable terminals: the Rockport and Plymouth Lines, for instance. The Foxboro branch too, maybe.
-
The Haverhill Line could continue to Portland, ME; the Lowell Line to Lake Winnipesaukee, the Fitchburg Line to the Berkshires...
-
...the Middleboro Line could go to Cape Cod or Newport, RI; etc etc. Lots of options!
-
a lot of subway lines did have anchor destinations. That's why the last Blue Line stop is Wonderland
-
yes, it used to be customary here too--if memory serves, this is how Holyoke's Mountain Park and Six Flags in Agawam both got started

honest question-wouldn't it be better for the lines to continue past big anchors so people on the far side of them could ride there?
-
Yes--provided they can muster enough ridership from the far side to make the extension practical
-
In Tokyo's case (and in most cases) the terminal anchors are at the edge of the city's built-up area; nowhere to extend to.
