Kidding! They don't believe it's *possible* to cover operating expenses with high ridership, so they don't try to achieve it.

-
And the key to making it all affordable: no conductors
-

-
So do paper tickets and POP.
-
get rid of the drivers/engineers too

Care to comment on how this applies to MTA in New York, who puts almost all track/car work on nights and weekends?
-
The MTA is not great at weekend service, but that's fundamentally a different problem than running trains once every 2 hours.
-
They do have similar root causes though – overstaffing of trains leads to high marginal costs of off-peak service, which leads to less...

lol, one of my pipe dream mbta expansions is orange line down washington st to at least roslindale, buses are way overloadedpic.twitter.com/tuNU5XtbBY
-
when i lived by there i'd get a ride to forest hills even though hyde park, edicott, readville all within easy reach -- why pay 2x?
-
this will never happen but free/reduced commuter rail to subway/bus transfer would mean a lot more ppl taking T to cambridge
-
or outside downtown boston in general
