Amtrak's long-distance routes already carry very few passengers, it is extremely unlikely that they can ever be cost-effective...

...I would say turn over their operation and funding to the states they serve, maybe multi-state coalitions based on each route.

Prices (end-to-end) appear too high for many, and they run on diesel. How much of a factor is that?

less than you might think...the lack of demand on the routes is a problem, greatly exacerbated by low frequency service

Are the prices fair, at least for long distances? Costs less to fly LAX-SAT than a very long ride in the Texas Eagle.

I'm not sure how fair they are...I think they're reasonable tho, given how many employee hours you have to cover (vs air travel)
