the train death count is for Japan only, where rail ridership is around 20 billion per year...

if we compare USA to USA (deaths per billion passenger miles): cars - 7.2 trains - 0.4 buses - 0.11 planes - 0.07

Japan has fewer accidents than USA for rail, but waaaaay higher passenger-km count, so their fatality rate would be much lower
