There are very few airports/flights serving small towns/cities. Concentrated in <30 major airports.

It's more than that. Post 9/11 security made many short flights pointless. Quicker to drive.

This was part of what killed several interior hubs - Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Memphis, Cinci, etc

No need for these hubs to gather short haul flight passengers if all flights were major airport to major airport.

These hubs all had big feeder networks from interior small towns and were not EAS subsidized.

America lacks a commitment to non-discriminatory access to commerce even though this is in US Constitution.
