As in the USA, fare gates only open when they read your ticket or credit card. In Japan, they are open by default...
...but snap shut on you if your payment doesn't go through, at which point a couple of gentlemen will escort you to a fare adjustment booth
First train I rode was on Southern Rail, Gatwick to Southampton. Nice interior, slightly messy, good scenery.pic.twitter.com/Qiz7s0cK1y

I rode Southwestern from Southampton to Dorchester--very messy interior, lots of litter...but amazing viewspic.twitter.com/vHGFvZgo1Z
At Dorchester South, I picked up a (double deck) bus that had been named after a smuggler and rode to Bridportpic.twitter.com/AWzC9r2Sx4
A few days later, I went to Dorchester West Station to begin the journey to Wales. It's unmanned--the building is a Dominos nowpic.twitter.com/cXwnG8QZdu
First pic came out blurry smh...love the back access path in second pic tho. A mossy station on a damp cloudy day

Very spartan seating arrangement... The train stopped next to some cows, who ran away when it revved back uppic.twitter.com/VDM6G2bsZ2
The train for Dorchester to Westbury was a 2-car DMU arrangement, bit cramped for legroom but no litter on boardpic.twitter.com/XR5ptHYYtE

Connecting at Cardiff Central en route to Cheltenham Spa--in UK I'd often see multiple trains at the same platform, very bad policy imopic.twitter.com/89tTvrcPhs
srsly it's begging for an accident and fucks with track availability (we were delayed entering the station for this reason lmfao)
Deutsche Bahn locos were *not* something I was expecting to find Love the GWR logo on the benches!pic.twitter.com/EGenObOs38
Cheltenham Spa has nice aesthetics tbh, but I had trouble getting that in pictures...pic.twitter.com/wEvvitQJ2D
Birmingham New Street, plus interior of my CrossCountry train to Stoke-on-Trentpic.twitter.com/MyTbvSyWWs
Stoke had a marvelous glass roof over the tracks, need to see more of this on railwayspic.twitter.com/2rOLeOGUpb
Platforms in the UK are very broad, but only at Stoke did I find the same for the gap between tracks...pic.twitter.com/ssxHPRyAkl
Virgin Pendolino has nifty displays on doors, nice profile aesthetic, blurry pic is b/c train is leavingpic.twitter.com/adyogPYxTH
