Until the Ueno-Tokyo viaduct was built, the Tokaido Line terminated at Tokyo, and the Utsunomiya/Takasaki Line at Ueno...
...so that only the Shonan-Shinjuku Line could offer thru service. Fortunately, this is no longer the case!
