This assumes no expansion of commuter rail lines--only expansion of subway (& tech upgrades on commuter lines to make them compatible)

The two proposed tunnels are outside crowded downtown peninsula of Boston, would hopefully be less complicated to drill for that reason
-
Blue Line extension parallel or beneath Red Line as far as Harvard, then to Framingham Line in Newton, via Watertown
-
Green line under Washington St to Dudley, then Blue Hills Ave to near Mattapan, where it joins Fairmount Line
-
Such tunnels would be much longer than a North-South link, but wouldn't be jostling for space w Big Dig or skyscraper foundations

don't you think the green line should be converted to heavy rail eventually?
-
this sketch today supposes two green line categories, heavy rail on core and D, light rail on B, C, E
-
only heavy rail portions would do thru service to commuter rail
