Notice a couple things here...the awkward shape of the train, the absence of any shelter (in a state with snowy winters!!), the concrete...
...at least they got the high platforms right! Let's move on to the next stop...
Fitchburg Station--this was the terminal for many years. They put more effort into the parking garage than into the station...pic.twitter.com/9dVrOC6Ncm
Fitchburg is a local bus hub--odd choice of bus bay layouts here...and as usual, waaay too much concrete. Sterile and bleak!pic.twitter.com/7sAgHgwXcW
Next stop: North Leominster Partial high platforms...c'mon guys, go the whole nine yards!pic.twitter.com/rpc7g4zrSW
North Leominster is also a hub for local buses, and also put way more effort into its new parking garage than into the actual stationpic.twitter.com/mWlCxZFFj0
Next is Shirley--finally, a nice aesthetic! But why is it so small? Passengers are still stuck waiting in the open...pic.twitter.com/N7vKvfhtY4
Station building as an afterthought, NEXT to tracks instead of surrounding them, is all too common in American commuter rail...
Next stop: Ayer Low platforms...bane of my existence...feels like you're just waiting in a parking lot!pic.twitter.com/TVWSygb2xJ
All the prozac in the world can't make this aesthetic tolerable...pic.twitter.com/bweZWJEYnF
Littleton is the next stop...this is what it used to look like!pic.twitter.com/EvEmoBzUUd
The old station building still exists, it is allegedly a "stove repair shop," lolpic.twitter.com/KmEOIeVsb2
Although the old station was in the center of Littleton, the existing one was built near a highway intersection in the middle of nowherepic.twitter.com/J4sDij6g27
The design is utterly insane...they put the platform very far from the entrance, accessible through two LONG rampspic.twitter.com/GecuFXxxmB
I visited this station with @NightErrantry, we found that the walkways are not actually enclosed: their walls are 100% porous
Consequently, you are exposed to bitter winds *even when you're inside the walkway.* Which, I might add, is prone to getting covered in ice.
How is it possible to fuck up in so many ways at once? IDK fam, IDK...
Next stop is South Acton--busiest stop on the line; some trains from Boston terminate here. Recently rebuilt (no pics of it finished)pic.twitter.com/EVjvbPeJmi
High platforms, YES! Too bad they still can't afford roofs...pic.twitter.com/6ZNYOI1vQo
Next stop is West Concord: at last, a station with a comfy aesthetic! The building has a restaurant--"Club Car Cafe"pic.twitter.com/MedZ9jT2ET
I've actually used this stop to get to Boston sometimes, by local standards it's decent. Low platforms tho...pic.twitter.com/lMeeRZ0IZe
Next stop is Concord Nice building, right? Home to several businesses...but...pic.twitter.com/zl19hp89KY
...all the trackside doors and windows have been boarded over and then *painted* to look like they're still usable. Insane.pic.twitter.com/e4wVfNzoAY
In other words: the station building is not for anybody who's actually using the station. Folks...I am at a loss for words...
Next stop is Lincoln--I love this pic, you can see how low platforms actually work (terribly)pic.twitter.com/Ol1f0LV9yi
Silver Hill Station no platform, just gravel with yellow slabs of concrete marking the edge of the safe zone Nice sunset thopic.twitter.com/Wc9H2ZFJre
Hastings Station--no sign, no info Where are the platforms? LOL, *the street is the platform,* that's where you board frompic.twitter.com/rnu6RV0zHn
I really, really wish I was joking about that
Kendal Green Station Could be worse, at least it has a buildingpic.twitter.com/BhNUkzacAD
