freight trains are run with diesel or electric *locomotives,* neither of which are outdated

they use locos instead of MUs because their carriages are built to hold cargo, not practical for all of them to have engines too

in the USA, diesel locos predominate because very little of our rail infrastructure is electrified

but to be clear: diesel engines are perfectly modern in passenger rail too, so long as MUs are used instead of locomotives
