There are plenty of reasons to prefer trains to buses but the big one for me is that buses are usually run in mixed traffic
Whereas a train only has to stop to let people on and off--if it's not at a station, it's moving; taking you to where you need to be.

Buses (and streetcars or any other transit without exclusive ROW) have the worst of both worlds. All the stops, none of the cruising.

They have to stop to let people on and off, AND they have to deal with traffic lights, intersections, traffic, etc. Absolute nightmare.

As you would expect, when people say that Bus Rapid Transit is like "a train on tires," what they mean is that it has an exclusive ROW.

Addendum: if you hear about a "Bus Rapid Transit" project that doesn't provide an exclusive ROW, you are being scammed my dude.

our trains are a niche item because standard issue trains in foreign countries are illegal here, thanks FRA regulations
