A car has to stop at intersections, to make turns, etc; it has to slow down in heavy traffic.

Whereas a train only has to stop to let people on and off--if it's not at a station, it's moving; taking you to where you need to be.
-
Buses (and streetcars or any other transit without exclusive ROW) have the worst of both worlds. All the stops, none of the cruising.
-
They have to stop to let people on and off, AND they have to deal with traffic lights, intersections, traffic, etc. Absolute nightmare.
-
As you would expect, when people say that Bus Rapid Transit is like "a train on tires," what they mean is that it has an exclusive ROW.
-
Addendum: if you hear about a "Bus Rapid Transit" project that doesn't provide an exclusive ROW, you are being scammed my dude.
