The boarding process for Amtrak at Penn Station is an truly inspired bit of lunacy

Do you take advantage of that fact by doing this: | -> | or this? --- -> |

Amtrak has you on the escalator single file so they can check your tickets as you go. They have a really weird fixation on checking them...
-
...you have to present a ticket to sit in the waiting room, to go to the platform, and when on the train. That takes a lot of staff...
-
...when you could just *install some fare gates* and everyone in the waiting area, platform, and on-board would be covered.
-
This is (obviously) how every busy station in Japan works--only in tiny rural ones are tickets checked by an employee.
