ATTENTION PASSENGERS Today we will be looking at the Tadami Line, which winds through the mountainous back country of eastern Japanpic.twitter.com/ou2Yc1dka7

This line is particularly interesting to me because it seems as though everyone in Japan knows it's useless.

It used to be two separate lines, and as recently as the opening of the first shinkansen, it still was. They weren't connected until 1971!

And then in 2011, torrential rain and landslides damaged the route, forcing JR East to close part of it with no announced reopening date.

So after a brief period of completion, the Tadami Line is again two separate lines, connected by a bus. Nobody is in a hurry to change that.
