This line is particularly interesting to me because it seems as though everyone in Japan knows it's useless.

-
It used to be two separate lines, and as recently as the opening of the first shinkansen, it still was. They weren't connected until 1971!
-
And then in 2011, torrential rain and landslides damaged the route, forcing JR East to close part of it with no announced reopening date.
-
So after a brief period of completion, the Tadami Line is again two separate lines, connected by a bus. Nobody is in a hurry to change that.

You steam fans will be happy to know that JR East sometimes runs an old-fashioned train on this route...pic.twitter.com/8sHXtBS24m

Another closed stop, Aizu-Kosugawa, and some pics of the stops at either end of the closed section, Tadami and Aizu-Kawaguchipic.twitter.com/pSdDGJoyhx

Heading east from Aizu-Kawaguchi, these are all active stations. So small!pic.twitter.com/4MiD1y5Dp1

Some have old designs, some are more modern...I love the one in the last pic here, just the stairs up to the platformpic.twitter.com/gUSGnra2Ck

The entire route--before the floods, of course--took four hours to traverse.pic.twitter.com/oQHUzc1VVp

The last few stops leading up to Aizu-Wakamatsu aren't *technically* on the Tadami Line, but are used by it anyway.pic.twitter.com/rrSR8CeNHS

Jumping back to the western portion of the route--this is Oshirakawa Station. If you can't tell, it rains (and snows) a lot here!pic.twitter.com/uuuoTmWtXB
