On the north face of the mountain you'll find Fujikyu Highland, an amusement parkpic.twitter.com/FmCwAqTHpC
The name of the company which owns this park, Fujikyu, comes from Fuji Kyuko, or Fuji Express. They run coach buses and a railway.pic.twitter.com/wePCguVIzm
The railway connects Otsuki, in the western suburbs of Tokyo, with Kawaguchiko ("Lake Kawaguchi")pic.twitter.com/GkUdH2yISq
For a long time, Fujikyu used repurposed JR East 165 series panorama trains on their route...pic.twitter.com/QAPiSYZbp2
...so-called because passengers could sit at the very front and enjoy panoramic views as they traveled.pic.twitter.com/JIpLGAprsZ
But those trains have recently been phased out and replaced with something much better...
Back in the 1990s, Odakyu Railway and JR East teamed up to offer an express service from Shinjuku to Gotemba called the "Asagiri"
The route used Odakyu tracks from Shinjuku to Shin-Masuda, then JR tracks to Gotemba. Both companies designed an Asagiri train.pic.twitter.com/SbsJAIS0Sr
That's the Odakyu version on the left, JR version on the right. Also--a correction, it was JR Central, not JR East.
Alas, the Asagiri was eventually discontinued and the trains set to be scrapped. Until...
...Fujikyu picked them up! The Odakyu 20000 series was rebuilt as the Fujikyu 8000 series...pic.twitter.com/sUs063yGEU
...and the JR Central 371 series was rebuilt as the gorgeous Fujikyu 8500 series, "Fujisan [Mt Fuji] View Express"pic.twitter.com/W4yGbgaVEc
To be clear--Fujikyu also runs commuter services; it isn't just for tourists. These are remodeled JNR 205 series trains--nice interior!pic.twitter.com/UmhY8NzFsr
Wrapping up this profile with a look at one of their stations, Shimoyoshida--very elegant, magnificent design!pic.twitter.com/VgQMUyLsO0
