For about 3 years now I've had a hypothesis that technological development is directly related to reducing transportation needs
-

-
This was inspired by Jacobs's explanation of how technology originates in cities and then spreads from there--for example...
-
...the development of agricultural technology = reducing transportation need for food (instead of roaming/hunting for it, farm it on site)
-
The other part of Jacobs's theories which supported my hunch was her explanation of import-replacement as a primary driver of development
-
Import-replacement as in "learning how to make, locally, what you used to import." I'm kinda repeating myself here, oh well.
-
Many short trips > a few long trips Short supply lines > Global supply lines Short brain network paths > long brain network paths
-
I need to develop this idea a bit further, it's pretty incoherent atm.
-
Sounds a bit like circuit design, where the trick is arranging the logic gates to minimize the distance the signals must travel.
