if the distance is too far, flying is more competitive; if the traffic is too light, the investment never breaks even

HSR is flashy and futuristic and means lots of contract $$$, so politicians dig it--but for actually improving mobility?

it is WAY more important--in a country like the USA, at least--to build up more local transit networks

if transit isn't a useful option for getting *around* cities, then it won't be very useful for getting *between* them either
