Time for a quick round of "things Japan does better than the USA" Today: Zoninghttps://twitter.com/BookOfTamara/status/771034892159201282 …

Other differences are more trivial than intrinsic, but worth mentioning...
-
...for instance: Japanese zoning is a national law, whereas in the USA every municipality develops its own zoning code
-
Moreover, Japanese zoning has just 12 zones, while in the USA you often need more, to account for all possible usespic.twitter.com/yfGjtUPCSZ
-
It's counterintuitive, but the Japanese approach allows *far* more flexibility for developers AND municipalities...
-
...not to mention, it keeps housing costs low by making it pretty easy to keep supply in line w/demand. San Francisco is pricier than Tokyo.

I lived in a mixed use zone. It went preschool, house, industrial lot, strip club, liquor store, house, house, liquor store....
-
that sounds very undesirable
-
could stand to lose the strip club but otherwise sounds fantastic
-
-
oh thought you were talking about living in Japan not sure why but Americans are committed to ugliness
-
Mixed use in Japan looks more like this (these are all w/in 5 mins walk of each other)pic.twitter.com/r7wBKShGoR
