Despite only being a little larger, the M8 has *twice* the mass as the 3000; this means more wear & tear and slower accel/decel
This weight discrepancy is because of American crash safety regulations, which mandate bulky trains. Somehow this isn't a problem in Japan.
Would love to see a study on relative safety, see how useful those safety regs really are.

The more fundamental problem is US crash safety focuses on surviving crashes, Japan's on preventing them
