M8 is 85' long, 3000 is 60'1" M8 is 10'6" feet wide, 3000 is 9'1" M8 is 65,700 kg, 3000 is 33,000 kg what's wrong with that picture?
Metro North's M8 vs Keisei's 3000 Both standard guage, both electric, both built by Japanese companiespic.twitter.com/eA6YLxLpr2

Despite only being a little larger, the M8 has *twice* the mass as the 3000; this means more wear & tear and slower accel/decel

This weight discrepancy is because of American crash safety regulations, which mandate bulky trains. Somehow this isn't a problem in Japan.
-
Would love to see a study on relative safety, see how useful those safety regs really are.
-
if memory serves accidents per passenger are wildly higher in the USA
-
The more fundamental problem is US crash safety focuses on surviving crashes, Japan's on preventing them
-
Typical. US gov seems to be a fan of "do stupid things, fix problems after" - should be "try to avoid doing stupid things"
