Got to work on time, set up, etc...within half an hour I overhear admin talking about server issues and saying all computers must be shutoff

About half an hour passes, no word, colleagues wondering what happened. Management talking about sending everyone home.

The culprit is what they call a "ransom virus." It locks certain files and won't let you get at them until you pay a few thousand dollars.

Apparently they're frequently used against government offices because (if the ransom is low) paying them off is our most expedient option.

More pressingly, they're apparently very time consuming to remove. I'm on my way home now and the office may be closed tomorrow too.
