People should understand history, but space worship is dumb. The 380kmh compromise
no, let me elaborate a bit: people have been mislead in USA (and other countries, but esp here) into thinking purpose of schooling is to imbue all students with a particular body of knowledge--this is wrong, the purpose is to RANK all students and determine their aptitude
You can for instance teach every student "Yuri Gagarin was the first man in space" but the purpose of this is not for 100% of them to be able to recall that fact a few weeks later, but to see what they make of it...
...for instance, some will simply conclude "wow cool first man in space lol" while others will conclude "the USSR was more successful than the USA in the early stages of the space race" and others conclude "it looks like getting to space first has little bearing on prosperity"
the teacher here is an imbecile because he's stuck at the first level--knowledge as a collection of trivia; he's just mad that kids have their own preferences in trivia and don't care about history or science trivia (but why should they? trivia isn't the point of either subject!)
thus, the compromise: yes, you ought to know about Yuri Gagarin for a number of reasons, but no, there's nothing particularly useful just about knowing his name or that he was just the first man in space
