My *only* consolation is that the populace of Japan doesn't routinely suffer cholera epidemics, so presumably it's not that important to wash your hands--but fuck it man, it still feels disgusting when you come out of the stall and realize you can't wash your hands

If you're a clean freak American like myself: bring sanitizer, that's all I can say That, and stick to bathrooms at American companies like McDonalds or Starbucks where possible--they are the most likely to have soap and hand dryers

Anyway this tweet brought to you by Hakodate Station, where I got caught empty-handed...fortunately the Tully's Coffee had a sink with soap...INSIDE THE CAFE, like right next to the dish return, for reasons unclear to me. None of the bathrooms in the station were as well-equipped

I will be here at the Tully's at Hakodate Station for another 30 minutes before my next train...not enough time to see my friend in the city or do anything really, so I'm syncing my dropbox and hope to get some picture posting done. Today was a bit of an ordeal, but successful.

When I was in China, some of the bathrooms didn't have toilet paper, soap or paper towels. I ended up carrying my own everywhere.

if it makes you feel any better, the mechanical act of washing for ~the same time as one is supposed to wash with soap get the germs off. so just make sure to scrub your hands well for about 20s.

A little Googling shows you are not alone. The one explanation that may make sense is that toilets did have sinks on top of them and these drained into the toilet tank and it was not desired to get soap in there.
