As soon as it starts crippling them I will start considering it a punishment--at present it looks more like better leverage for workers, practical applications for automation, and rewilding of much of the countryside https://twitter.com/_polcel_/status/1053063197148790785 …

It's quite simple: if it's about reproducing your own people, reproduction is too high. If it's about reproducing foreigners, it's not enough.

Besides, don't get too excited if Japan suddenly has a whole bunch of young people. That's typically a precursor to imperialism

People don’t understand that they can up the b/rate in a few decades if they want to. They are doing the smart thing (accepting next to 0 outsiders, conscious of their lack of arable land and resources etc. )

Too crowded. Proportion of elderly to youth is going further out of bounds. Something is off.

The problem is that Japan is in a trap. The population is getting to the point that it can't sustain itself; the elderly can't work, and they don't have any grandchildren to support them when their children can no longer work.
-
However, Japan is so overpopulated already that it can't take any children, not to mention that the economic situation of Japan makes it nearly impossible to afford having children anyway.
-
The solution for that is urban expansion or do what the Arabs do and just build more land as artificial islands. Space is three dimensional, not just 2D. You can build up and down and not only sideways.
-
The Japs already do all of this lol. You can only go so high and there's only so much *arable* land
-
Then perhaps it is time for new conquest. The divine wind must blow anew!

the thing I learned about population is that there are always places with too many people and places with too few, and that can be within miles of one another.
