I agree, just added a side note: misuse/intentional disregard doesn't help & at extremes can demoralize operators, etc. I also think that folks (in my experiences) are less conscientious in the use of public transportation than in how they act in a grocery story for example

Yes, they are less conscientious--but people expect that of them, nobody holds them accountable, nobody even cleans up after them, tacitly saying "this is an acceptable way to behave, this is an acceptable way for a bus to look." Grocery stores take cleanliness more seriously!
