Given that meth was *invented* in Japan and is one of the main revenue sources of the yakuza, this might have a lot to do with protecting the domestic market from (potentially very violent) competition

People who think prohibition doesn't work have never lived in Japan. Worse yet they always point to Portugal, the sick man of Europe, as an example of drug legalisation working.
