Let's get a closer look--circled in red, the three busiest routes: 30 and 31 operate around UMass, and are free for all passengers--which accounts for their lead over 7, which runs in Springfield and charges fares. All operate at 15-minute headways for most of the day.pic.twitter.com/cTZHTl6bWJ
Does the transit authority really provide free bus routes to all? In Pittsburgh, students ride all buses free, but the universities pay for it (bulk discounted, but still paid!)
The transit authority has three garages, each with its own operator--one in Springfield, one in Northampton, and one at UMass. All routes operating form the UMass garage are free for all passengers--the 5 colleges ostensibly pay for it, but it's only 1/8 of lost fare revenue.
Various other routes are free for college students if they present a college ID, but charge fares for other riders.
