They talk about the RER in Paris as an example of good, modern commuter/regional/suburban rail. And it is! At least within Europe, and certainly compared to the USA. But the Odakyu Railway *alone* carries more people in a year than the entire RER/Translinien network.

Odakyu Ridership FY07: 714 million RER + Translinien Ridership FY06: 657 million Odakyu of course is only *one* suburban operator around Tokyo, and not the busiest either, whereas RER + Translinien accounts for *all* suburban service in Paris afaik.
