Heck, even when *everything* went by train, there were still some sort of trucks for delivery in town.

Horse-drawn wagons, sure. And wheelbarrows, and hand carts. Can we imagine a way to distribute freight that is safer than horse-drawn wagons?

Wheelbarrows and hand carts, probably. Are trucks safer than horse-drawn wagons?

Trucks go faster. Horses are generally pretty good at not running directly into walls.

Right, so horse-drawn wagons are probably safer than trucks (and human-powered might be even safer, idk). Therefore if we're not still using horses for most freight, there must be more to logistics than safety.

Right, the logistics world is full of assholes who put more priority on moving their piece of shit from one place to another than some child's life. That's no way to do logistics.https://capntransit.blogspot.com/2013/12/the-safety-culture-of-northern-boulevard.html …

lmao how are you gonna call this a problem with the logistics industry and not with our road design standards--how many more people get hit by cars?

You know, it's possible for something to be caused by a combination of multiple factors...

yeah, exactly--which is why I'm baffled by your obsession with trucks as a primary factor (again re: Japan--higher truck mode share but much safer streets!)

You mean "No More Freight Hostages," right? Yes; the difference is I don't at all expect we can (or should) eliminate cars entirely from the transportation picture. They offer concrete advantages for people, which goes back to this point:https://twitter.com/380kmh/status/1047904567327903744 …
