Freight mode split in Japan by tonnage is 91% road, 1% rail, 8% boat; by ton-km it's 51% road, 5% rail, 44% boat. Rail is optimal freight mode for cheap bulky freight going long distances w/o water routes available--not for short-haul, high-value (or anything time sensitive)
Very curious to know the % of rail freight traffic in Europe that's classified as "express"

I don't know. What I do know is that freight trains are expected to be fast enough to fit in a passenger slot, not vice versa, so you end up with freight going up 2.7% grades at 47 mph.
