I'm sure there's plenty of fat to cut, but what I want to see most is the conductors phased out and retrained as engineers, with more off-peak trains. A virtuous circle of efficiencies reinvested in improved service, not just cuts for cuts' sake https://twitter.com/YIMBY_Princeton/status/1047526744151023617 …

Urban legend, no FRA rule against one-person train operation. If you disagree, please show your work

Here's mine: a few FRA-regulated railroads already run OPTO. Furthermore, the FRA attempted to pass such a rule a few years ago, but never did:https://nextcity.org/daily/entry/proposed-two-person-train-crew-rule-rattles-passenger-rail-advocates …

The safety law which I am getting said 2 people, one driver and one responsible for the management and evacuation of passengers, which means an engineer and a conductor in practical usage, and freight has said that to be 3 people in canadaian and US Ld trains

I've heard SO many railfans tell me this, I even heard a Metra spokesperson say it (and then back down when I challenged them on it). What I've never seen is anybody find an actual rule or law stating this. Let me know when you find it...

Nothing here that says that the person who carries out these functions can't be the engineer

Also 239 even states you need a conductor for passenger railroads because of the safety training (tourist railroads are exempt), and the engineer job is to just drive the train). When multiple unions across the US and lawyers agree on thispic.twitter.com/DZKLizCbNg

I distinctly notice no reference to MUs here, is this an exploit or do they just pretend they're locomotives?

mus have special snowflake requirements like inspections every 92 days for slave units and inspectons of control units

It’s why NJT doesn’t have every unit as a controller sontou only have some Multilevels with control cabs, less labor required. It’s why cabbages are also pouplar, you have a ready made control stand and can hold luggage
