Not to mention that it's hardly great for the poor to be subject to deteriorating stations, poorly-maintained equipment, and the constant threat of service cuts and changes, all of which are due to reliance on state funding which can (and does) go away at any time.

If the poor were having a marvelous time of it on our *current* transit systems in USA, you might have a point. But they, and all transit riders today, are routinely fucked over by this "transit as a charity" mentality. As a guy who doesn't have a car myself, I'm sick of it.
