"Grocery stores are a means to an end and if the people that need them can't even afford groceries, then why the fuck are they there?" But we don't worry about this, because we let grocery stores charge whatever products actually cost, then help customers who can't pay for them.

What's particularly maddening about the "set transit prices based on what the poorest can pay" mentality is that there is ALWAYS SOMEONE POORER; I routinely see people who already get half price (due to age or disability) who need to ask other riders for a dime or quarter.

Those people would be much better off if they were just given a free monthly transit pass as a regular part of their state benefits! And of course doing so would end the perceived need to set transit prices artificially low.
