Longer trips = more miles of track to maintain = more wear on the vehicles = more driver hours to pay = COST MORE On any mode of transit--buses included--you should be paying based on how far you travel

Flat fares penalize short trips and encourage long ones while failing to deliver the revenue to support them. Bad idea!

I understand why people are reluctant to say transit should make money--on the one hand, most doubt that it's even possible, and on the other, they're leery of such a basic necessity being used to get a few people rich. But this is about securing a future for transit...

When transit loses money, someone has to be found who will foot the bill--and the continued existence of transit (and the mobility of everyone who uses it!) becomes dependent on the whims of that someone. If they decide they don't want to pay so much, too bad for the riders!

Moreover, if transit owes its existence to funding provided by people who don't necessarily ride transit, then transit will *necessarily* be operated with those people's interests placed above the riders. These interests may align sometimes, but when they don't...

taking transit I will gladly pay the highest price for "where ever, all day" especially as a visitor it is extremely difficult to answer "can I get where I need to be in x zones in under the y alloted minutes? And will they accept the same payment types elsewhere if not?"

it is the worst to buy a pass, find out it doesnt actually get you where you need or you get held up and it expires, and suddenly you need exact change (god knows how much) for a bus driver who would rather just let you on for free than wait for you to sort it

that said: day pass was $8 when I lived in vancouver a decade ago, probably way more now and still not profitable

yes, it's not *just* low revenue which is hurting north american transit--there are also inflated costs in a lot of areas that need to be brought under control

My only complaint about the Metro fares is how bad the Metro cards themselves are. I've used Tokyo's Pasmo and Suica, even CTA's Ventura cards. The DC Metro ones are the only tap card I've used where I've had to stand at a turnstyle for 5 minutes to get it to register
