want to like this but two big problems: - advances in technology have a very real impact on what is at stake when developing a city - THAT ANCIENT CITY (Shibam, Yemen) WASN'T PLANNED, CITIES ARE RARELY PLANNED, GET THAT THRU YOUR THICK FUCKING SKULLSpic.twitter.com/qJoaNt2YVq

the fact that people think "planning cities" is the default mode of urban development--as if this is sim city or some shit--is a real crisis in understanding how cities function and grow

hate to break it to you but urban planners aren't people who sit around in office buildings saying "and now some houses will go here, and now a grocery store will go here" etc etc

seriously tho how do you look at this and think "wow this looks like it was the product of a single master plan"pic.twitter.com/FHyu3J6S6g

you have got to understand that plans work in two ways: - the common way, in which a plan is IMPOSED onto a city that would otherwise do its own thing - the less common way, in which a new city is designed ex nihilo according to a plan which usually gets ignored after a decade

ergo they are a jumbled mess of houses and shit crammed inside walls

"jumbled mess" is ideal and walls aren't really a factor since the late 1800s

If a city was founded with a idea to be planed it will be. makes more sense? And youd be suprised at the jumbled mess part, look at the renovations post ww1 or ww2

the critical flaw of plans is that they can't anticipate future needs, which inevitably degrade from adherence to the plan

but this is good--a city that resolutely sticks to its plan in the face of economic reality is a city that will quickly end up stagnant and depopulated
