If I'm letting them off the hook by calling this cursory gesture "protection," what would you call taking for granted that streets must be wide and have fast car traffic, so that bikes can only be safe with significant investment?
"what would you call taking for granted that streets must be wide and have fast car traffic" I dont call that anything. What I'm saying is we cant give our leaders something to point at and said "See, I already gave you a protected bike lane. Now go away." Which is what they do.
My bone to pick is not with you but with @NACTO, @ITEhq @aashtospeaks and @MUTCD. A k-rail or curb buffer would not have taken so much space away from the motorized use too.
