Ming had unambiguously better generals and I only won a single engagement with them--and that was one where they had attacker penalties AND I outnumbered them 2:1. To top it off, a much larger army arrived shortly after and defeated mine. Gotta get better!

I think my problem is (weird as this sounds) having periods of peace that last too long--it kills army tradition and makes it impossible to get good generals.

Have you ever considered not forming Japan, leaving Kyoto but going independent daimyo for the OP bonuses to morale and inf combat?
