"Driving here sucks and everyone complains about the traffic, but the train is virtually empty." Yes, bc use of one mode is only marginally related to how miserable the rest are--a transit network with limited scope and infrequent service is no alternative to sitting in traffic!

A nominal alternative is no alternative--it must be VIABLE! Which means, among other things, that it must be planned to account for *all* parts of society, *all* kinds of trips. Not just for the rich or the poor. Not just for the elderly or for students. Not just for commuting!

I think the “snooty people are too good to get on a train with poor people” is untrue. It only becomes a prob when you’ve got so many of one type, anyone outside that type feels uncomfortable. A lone poor person doesn’t want to get on a train full of all Armani suits, either.
