Roundabouts in USA are too throttling imo--I understand the reasoning (narrow lane = lower speed, deflection = lower speed) but it's kind of backward; intersections are already the primary chokepoints in a road system and the point of roundabouts is to streamline them

Narrow lanes & deflections are useful ways to control speed *on streets,* but applying the same very effective tools at intersections just means throwing away a lot of the advantage you get by eliminating traffic lights--people will drag race btw intersections, then choke at them

Why are traffic engineers so determined to fuck up roundabouts in USA? Well, this is a bit of a guess, but I think it's because you get a lot of accidents in intersections (due to conflicts + high speeds on green light), so they use roundabouts to address this

roundabouts always do two things: - eliminate turning conflicts - eliminate excess wait time from red lights and can be designed to do a third: - force traffic to slow down

When I speak favorably about roundabouts, I'm only considering the first two impacts--I dislike roundabouts that deliberately slow traffic down (that they tend to be laughably large and overdesigned doesn't help)

imagine putting a round about in a city and state without any and expecting people to know how they work. that's what one here is like.
-
yeah there's a learning curve to anything new--no excuse for bad design tho

Roundabouts are a disease in France. During 90s and 2000s they put them everywhere.
-
You nearly can't have too many roundabouts. They give better traffic flow, reduce fuel consumption, cut travel times (especially at night) and reduce the severity of incidents. I don't see the downside
-
There are useless places to put turnabouts. And a lot of them appear to be on the roads and cities where I happen to drive since years.
-
Could you give an example? I've never seen a roundabout that would have been better as just a regular intersection. Only issue is size requirements
-
Sowwy, I have not my collection on me.
