Reminder that the talk about Uber, Lyft, etc "stealing riders" from transit is mostly nonsense: looking at these nationwide figures, it's abundantly clear that most trips made by ridesharing apps simply DIDN'T GET MADE before those apps existed. They are growing the pie!pic.twitter.com/ZIMQ4ppbQx

2017, total trips made by Bus, TNC, Taxi = 8.2 billion 2018, total trips made by Bus, TNC, Taxi = 9.3 billion it's a pity this little graph doesn't have more years of bus rider data--would love to see 2012, for example

Moreover: to whatever extent TNCs *are* sharking riders from transit, it's important to be honest...unreliable service, disgusting conditions, infrequent schedules, etc are all treated as a matter of course by most transit providers, and it's no wonder people are bailing!

It is staggeringly short-sighted to try and salvage transit ridership by suppressing useful travel options--and it's downright malicious and vindictive when this is pushed by transit operators that clearly don't care about their passengers' actual experiences

Do you want more people to ride your buses and trains? Run more frequent service, fix mechanical problems, clean up the vehicles and stations, etc etc--basically, RUN A GOOD SERVICE that people actually want to use!

A few months ago I went on a trip and used metro systems in Pusan and Beijing, no problems. Returned via Newark, where the airport train to my domestic connecting flight...broke down.

A lot of #urbanplanning sucks in #HongKong now, but the planning of trains seems unaffected.

I'm kinda sad they're building a bridge to Macau and Zhuhai. It seems like the only proper way to cross the delta should be by boat.

The Macau bridge is not of a quality I would feel safe using.

Yes but how do you get the people who run mass transit to care about the people using it?
