I still don't really understand why the discussion about improving passenger rail in the US (both by supporters & opponents apparently) focuses so much in intercity, instead of intracity/intrametro travel. You know, the type of trips people regularly take?

I guess it's cause most people are so auto-centric in their day to day lives, they can't really conceive of another way, but long distance travel is infrequent enough, and driving for hours is annoying enough, that people are more open to a trying something new?

My impression is they think trains are supposed to be for long distance travel, which is silly, but w/e

Australia has superior intracity networks, the intercity variety not so much...

Proportionate to its population tho...they have less than 10% of U.S. population but similar land area

True but Melbourne to Sydney & up the coast to Brisbane could support decently fast service I think if they made the investment, although they are a little too far for the optimal distance
