significant thing about a railway isn't that the vehicles run on steel rails--it's that all traffic on the ROW is scheduled! This lack of what I will call "ROW integrity" is a bigger obstacle to nice trains in USA than our idiotic crash requirements (it's what causes them tbh)

How will planes land on US highways in case of war now like DoD intended

I'm skeptical that was ever the intent of US highways (judging by their width, grades, and curve radii), but if so, it has been impractical since the late 1960s (due to jumbo jets)

F-xx fighters etc may have been the intent. Never fear, the solution is simple - have the lines running just outside the highway and the pantograph angled away. Feels safer(ish) too to folks under the power lines.
