Uber's business model, from what I've heard, has been "get people hooked on cheap taxi-like travel while losing money, then switch to driverless cars so we can stop paying drivers and finally make money." What if there's a better way to run this business?

Uber's initial advantage was being able to charge much less than conventional taxis for a comparable ride. The gap between their rates and taxi rates is pretty big, though, and there's room to charge a lot more than they do today while still being cheaper than old taxis...

Replying to @380kmh
The size of this gap varies significantly by city, I think. To me it has always seemed very small to non-existent in N.Y.; big in Boston; medium sized in D.C.

interesting--here in Western MA, the difference is striking: a ride home from the bar is down to $7 instead of $11, a ride to the next town is down from $30 to $11~15, and a ride to the nearest city is down from $70~80 to $25~30
