This would work out better for the drivers, better for the investors, and while it'd be an imposition for the riders, it would probably go over better than losing Uber entirely.

Uber is a system of decentralized transportation. Instead of calling for a taxi a computer is making matches with nearby drivers and sending them your way. How they thought they could develop driverless car technology is beyond me.
